Qnovo Adds Certainty to EV Battery Passports with New Battery Genome Application
The application gives OEMs a clearer view of battery health, risk and value than sparse data can provide
MILPITAS, CA, September 24, 2026 —Qnovo, a leader in battery intelligence software, todayannounced it is piloting a new software application built on the Qnovo Battery Genome that gives automakers more certainty about thecondition and value of the batteries they put on the road. Used electricvehicles are priced on uncertainty: two batteries of the same age and mileagecan age very differently depending on driving profiles, environmentalconditions and cell-to-cell variation, and the sparse data available in theaftermarket cannot tell them apart.
That uncertainty is about to have a rippleeffect throughout the industry. Beginning February 18, 2027, the EU will require a digital batterypassport for every EV batteryplaced on its market. Battery passports are an important step towardtransparency, and for most batteries the basic data they carry will be enough. But a passport built on limited data cannot see a hidden defect or acceleratedaging at the cell level. For the automaker certifying that passport, a batterythat fails after being declared healthy is a liability, and as more EVs enterservice, the number of those outliers grows.
Reducing that uncertainty requires the rich datathat exists only inside the vehicle. Together with its automotive OEM partners,Qnovo applies the Battery Genome to the battery’s full electrochemical record, including charging behavior, operating history, environmental exposure andcell-level variation. This software then identifies markers of acceleratedaging and hidden defects, projecting how the battery is likely to age. Theresult is a clearer, risk-adjusted view of what the battery is and what it isnot, with residual value as one of its outputs.
“Battery passports are a welcome step towardstransparency, but without a better understanding of the battery, it opens OEMsto liability,” said Nadim Maluf, CEO of Qnovo. “Since the Battery Genome runsin the vehicle where the rich data lives, we know with added certainty what thebattery is doing and what it is not doing. That gives the OEM more insight overwhat is out in the field and more confidence in every assessment.”
As a recognized automotive supplier withsoftware shipping in the auto industry, Qnovo brings the application to OEMs,fleet operators, and insurers as an extension of a stack already deployed, including Adaptive Fast Charging and Health and Safety Diagnostics, and as anatural fit for the software-defined vehicle.
Qnovo will demonstrate the application at The Battery Show North America in booth #1005 in Detroit from October 13-15, 2026.
